![]() ![]() After purchasing the Rad Mini for my wife I was a little depressed looking at how beautiful the Rad mini looks and the features that it possessed. I just reached my 100 mile on my expan 5 and my wife has reached her 37 miles on her Rad Mini. Me and my wife have traveled out on different trails throughout the Sacramento and and yuba area. Like the Front suspension, hydraulic brakes, A better display showing the miles battery and other items that comes with the display.Overall both bikes are great. I think is a lot better looking bike with all the extra features that the the expand 5 should have had. I turned around and I purchased the Rad Mini for my wife. I currently own the Rad Expan5 it’s OK not the best. If you prioritize lightweightness but still look for good battery capacity and motor power, you can put your trust in the experience of Rad Power Bikes with Rad Expand 5. In my opinion Rad Expand 5 has a lot of great features and presents it in the most affordable way possible. The RadExpand 5 comes with a price tag of $1,499, which makes it the second most affordable e-bike following the RadMission which is priced at $1,199. About the derailleur, the 7-Speed MicroShift RD-M26 rear derailleur comes with a Microshift under-bar-mounted thumb shifter, which I find to be very functional. Although they function great I prefer to use hydraulic disc brakes on the e-bike I would use and I know that I’m not alone regarding this matter. Rad Power Bikes uses the same mechanical disc brakes on its models for years and the Rad Expand 5 is no exception to that. CST BFT, 20″ x 4.0″ (100-406) tires of Rad Expand 5 have puncture resistant liners and come with reflective sidewall stripes. Looks like Rad Expand 5 is covering the lack of front suspension with 4’’ wide tires. ![]() The battery promises a range of 25 (min) to 45 (max) miles, which comes as no surprise for these values. Speaking of charging, it takes 6.5 hours to charge the battery of Rad Expand 5 from zero. The 48V 14Ah Lithium NMC battery (672 Wh) is externally mounted to the front of the seat tube, which makes it very easy to remove for charging and replace it back. The Rad Expand 5 also, like other models by Rad Power Bikes, is controlled by a right-hand twist throttle. Being a typical Class 2 e-bike, the Rad Expand can make you go at a top speed of 20 mph. The Rad Expand 5 makes use of the custom manufactured 750W rear-mounted geared hub motor as most of the models by Rad Power Bikes. Also the e-bike doesn’t fall over thanks to the built-in stand. With a total payload capacity of 275 lbs, the Rad Expand is also capable of folding down to 28’’ x 25’’ x 41’’. With a 6061 Aluminum Alloy frame, the standover height of 16’’ makes the Rad Expand the most accessible model by Rad Power Bikes. If you know about the RadMini and its popularity, you’ll understand why the Rad Expand 5 comes forward with its frame design. Especially when we’re talking about folding e-bikes, you would appreciate the lightweightness. While some riders might miss the suspension fork, this removal has definitely helped the e-bike lose some weight: the e-bike weighs 62.5 lbs- and 55 lbs without the battery. ![]() But the first thing to notice about the frame for those who know the RadMini Step-Thru 2 is not about the sharpness of its look.
